Encountered a Roadkilled Wild Animal? Report it Easily with the "Safe Wildlife Crossing" Bot and Help Reduce Roadkills

If you come across a roadkilled wild animal, you can now easily report it through the “Safe Wildlife Crossings”Safe Passages for Wildlife bot at 053-457-8888 or via the link.

We are pleased to introduce the new bot for reporting wildlife roadkills, designed to be simple and accessible via WhatsApp. Anyone can quickly report a wild animal injured on the road without needing prior technical knowledge or filling out complicated forms. We developed the bot in collaboration with leading experts in nature conservation, ecology, and landscape architecture, including Dr. Motti Charter, Prof. Asaf Schwartz, Dr. Daniel Metcalfe, Eli Panov, and Maya Siegel, the CEO of the organization.

Why Is It Important to Report?

The data you provide is crucial for making fact-based decisions that allow us to develop smart solutions to reduce wildlife roadkills in Israel. The existing database of the Nature and Parks Authority does not present a complete picture, especially regarding reptiles and birds. While official data reports about 2,000 roadkill incidents annually, scientists estimate the true number is ten times higher. For example, Dr. Charter's research showed that many barn owls hit by vehicles are not documented at all—this led us to the idea of creating our reporting hotline.

Important Safety Guidelines

Before reporting, please read the safety guidelines registered in the link below.

Simple and Quick Reporting via WhatsApp

The "Safe Wildlife Crossings" bot enables easy reporting of wildlife roadkills. The user-friendly interface collects basic details about the incident: the location of the roadkill, the animal involved, and a photo. Additionally, the bot allows users to send their precise location via GPS or to enter the location manually if GPS is unavailable.

Identifying the Animal Species Using Computer Vision

One of the bot’s unique features is its use of computer vision technology to identify the species of the road killed animal. Users take a photo of the animal, and the bot identifies the species using advanced algorithms. This capability contributes to more accurate data collection, helping us identify trends, highlight high-risk areas, and tailor specific solutions for each species.

Data That Leads to Solutions

The data helps in identifying "hot spots" on roads, which can lead to actions like setting up fences, signs, and designated wildlife crossings. Every report brings us one step closer to a sustainable solution.

Future Impact of the Hotline

The new hotline is an essential tool in the fight to protect wildlife, maintain ecological balance, and raise environmental awareness in Israel.
