This week, while driving on a quiet road late at night, I noticed movement from the roadside. Just as I began to accelerate, a porcupine dashed across the road. I slammed on the brakes, my heart skipping a beat. Fortunately, nothing happened, and I continued driving as usual.
But what if it had been a striped hyena or a caracal? What if I had hit that poor porcupine? The encounter could have ended very differently. Have you experienced something similar? Would you like to avoid such incidents? If so, you’ve come to the right place!
The Problem
Wildlife around us suffers immensely due to accelerated construction and the fragmentation of open spaces. These animals are forced to gamble with their lives, crossing dangerous roads, often resulting in fatalities.
In Israel, over 2,000 wild animals are killed on roads each year—a number that continues to rise. Our mission is to save lives, change this reality for wildlife, and make roads safer for everyone.
To achieve this, we’ve designed and launched a unique program: “Wildlife and Communities”, aimed at empowering local communities to become active participants in protecting wildlife
What Is the Program?
Your community holds immense power and influence. With a little knowledge, professional guidance, and goodwill, you can change the ecological balance in your area.
Our program invites you to become active partners in protecting nature. Through a series of lectures about local wildlife, fascinating field workshops, and professional training, you’ll learn about:
How these animals behave and interact with their environment.
Practical tools and actions to prevent wildlife roadkills.
Solutions implemented with the support of experts in the field.
Research and In-Depth Understanding
At the beginning of this journey, we conducted research into roadkill hotspots across the country. In collaboration with Dr. Dror Danbaum, an expert in the ecological impacts of roads and ecological crossing designs, we mapped out high-risk roads and areas with significant roadkill rates, especially involving endangered species.
This data allowed us to identify communities where impactful changes could be made. We tailored our training program specifically for these communities.
Building the Program
Together with the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, academics, and educators, we created a program that addresses the needs of local councils.
The program has two main stages:
Training Phase: Nine sessions where participants receive professional tools and knowledge.
Implementation Phase: Planning and executing a community project with guidance from mentors.
The chosen solutions are coordinated with local community needs and may include:
Adjustments to fences.
Monitoring wildlife movement.
Installing underpasses or overpasses for safe crossings.
After the project is completed, we continue to monitor and maintain it, reviewing results a year later. We aim to see a reduction in roadkill rates and a gradual restoration of biodiversity.
What Does the Community Gain?
Imagine a community where wildlife thrives, where children grow up connected to nature, and where you can take pride in being part of a meaningful change.
By participating in our program, you’ll not only contribute to nature conservation but also:
Enjoy unforgettable experiences.
Meet new people.
Strengthen your connection with nature.
Learn new skills.
Experience the joy of working together to build a better future for everyone.
